week 5 - 7

Task 7 - PHOTOSHOP (5 hrs)

Brief: Source a digital image of an object and use this as the 'palette' for an abstract digital composition using the Photoshop functions: layers, transform, copy, and adjustments.

  • Inspired by my earlier investigation into the form of cutlery, my source image was a series of antique spoons.

  • I took the following steps:

    • isolated the spoons using the cut tools.

    • copied them into a wheel shape, so the bowls of the spoons layered over eachother like scales.

    • experimented with scaling these circular forms up and down, with different combinations of colour, light and dark.

    • transformed the circle motif into a square tile with the warp tool, and layered it over itself, again playing with light and colour.

  • The resultant compositions moved through a combination of black and bright, star-like patterns that reminded me of stain glass, or the illustrations of “biblically accurate” angels. My next version played more with the black and white contrast and the square form, which mimicked both the patterns of floor tiles and, through the interior of the shape, the iris of an eye, repeated over and over. My last work returned to the stain-glass composition, where I pushed colour and saturation further and further into the realm of psychedelic and dizzying.

  • The theme of abstraction through visual confusion - both of pattern and colour - runs throughout.
